New ‘Jack Haffner’s Store’ opens at state border
Deli and convenience store open 24 hours; a first for 86-year-old chain

HAVERHILL, MASS. (November 29, 2011) — Curious motorists who have observed construction at the state line now know the purpose of the distinctive stone and wood building sporting a ski lodge appearance. Jack Haffner’s Store formally put its sign in place today, featuring a likeness of John “Jack” Haffner who founded the chain with his wife Emma in 1925.

Taylor P. King of Haverhill slices a customer’s deli order at the new Jack Haffner’s Store, Route 125 at the Haverhill and Plaistow border.

The new deli and convenience store is open 24-hours-a-day serving not only those filling their gasoline tanks or using the car washes, but also area employees and residents. Although the Route 125 store opened quietly earlier this month, Manager Michael R. Connors of Tewksbury says the public has heartily embraced the new establishment.

“It’s fast becoming a lunchtime favorite. There are a variety of hot and cold foods available from pizza and subs to the popular eight ounce Black Angus burger for only $5.49. Another half dollar adds fries, soda and a scoop of either potato macaroni salad or cole slaw,” says Connors.

Connors, who was involved in more than two dozen store openings during his 25-year tenure with another chain, says the store also offers fresh-made breakfast sandwiches, soft drinks, coffee, baked goods and a full delicatessen. Convenience store items include the usual including newspapers, bread, candy and snacks to household necessities and pet supplies. An ATM, Massachusetts lottery tickets and tobacco products will soon follow, he says.

The store’s interior is almost as unusual as its exterior. It features a large painting of a moose by family member Andrew Royce Fournier and a faux wide board wood grain floor.

The company has a long and local history. A family-run business, Haffner’s Service Stations Inc., was founded in 1925 with one small “filling station” at 69 Parker Street in Lawrence. Eventually the family opened auto service garages, home heating oil and kerosene delivery, and more gas stations. In the 1930s, Jack and Emma’s child, Louise, became the first woman in the state to obtain both a burner-service technician license and her Class-1 tractor-trailer license in an effort to play a larger role in the family business.

Later, Emma’s son, E. Haffner Fournier, took the helm, opening service stations in many Merrimack Valley communities such as North Andover, Tewksbury, Methuen, Haverhill and Lowell. In 2009, after E. Haffner’s passing, his son David Fournier became the fourth generation to continue the family legacy.

Haffner’s is best known for providing low-cost, full-service oil and propane delivery and maintenance. Moreover, it has established 14 service stations throughout the Merrimack Valley area, many of which feature a car wash.
